Prom Time!
It's that time of year again when everyone is making the final decisions over dresses, shoes, accesories, dinner arrangments and calling around for last minute appointments to get their hair and nails done. Here are a few things to consider when thinking about the perfect "do" for you this Prom season.
Have realistic expectations about your finished look. Not all hair and all lengths are suited to the styles that you find in fashion magazines. These styles were created to be photographed and may not be able to withstand a night of dining and dancing. There is nothing more embarassing than being on the dance floor and feeling your hairstyle sliding slowly down your head. Check with your stylist a week or so before your big night out. Most stylists are happy to take a look at what you have in mind before the occasion and can help you determine what is best for your hairs style, texture and length. Bring pictures with you and be open to any suggestions they might have. Make sure that the style that you choose will work with the dress you will be wearing.
Show up on time for your appointment and make sure that your hair is completely dry before you come into the salon. This will allow your stylist to focus all of there attention on creating the perfect look for you instead of drying the last bit of moisture from your hair so that it will support your style. Remember to wear a button down top to your appointment. There have been a few times throughout the years that we have had to cut a frantic guest out of a t-shirt and send them out the door with one of our cover-ups to keep them from messing up their hair at home while getting dressed for their evening out.
Special occasion hair is one of our passions at Vincent's Hair Design. Our staff has the experience and the talent to create a look that is right for you. Come in and experience the difference we can make for your special evening out.Saturday, April 23, 2011
Saturday? Already?
Wow, this week went by in a hurry. Time really does seem to fly when you're having fun and I don't think anyone has as much fun as we do. It's early morning and quiet in the Salon. I cherish these moments of peacefull tranquility, long before the first guests arrive, the staff comes rushing in and the day begins once again. It's the Saturday before Easter and we'll be busy all day snipping, coloring, fluffing and primping, getting people ready for the holiday and the warm weather that is on the way.
I've seen people posting on Facebook all week long about how Easter isn't all about the chocolate bunnies and colored eggs and they're right. But, I'm thinking of holding an all night bonfire vigil this evening in hopes that I might finally get to see the giant, pink and white bunny that comes sneaking around my yard each year, laying chocolate eggs and spreading joy and happiness. Anyone that cares to join me can reach me at the Salon today until 4:00pm, cst, or send me a message on FB.So, praise the Lord and pass the chocolate bunnies and have a Happy Easter everyone!

Comb it over or cut it off?
While fishing in the sea of my FB friends for questions to address on the blog, I came across an interesting though delicate subject for discussion. An old schoolmate of mine proposed the question " What should I do to make my combover look better?"
The answer is obvious to those of us that have been blessed with a full head of hair but for the folically challenged the question takes on a whole and new dimension. Remember that God made a few perfect heads and then put hair on the rest of them to cover up their imperfections.
My advice to those with sparsely populated scalps has always been to cut it as short as your comfort levels allow. Trying to disguise the fact that you are loosing your hair by covering up the afflicted areas of your noggin only serves to call attention to the situation. I know it sounds crazy that by sacrificing the locks that you have left you will appear less bald but gentlemen, it is true. Besides, your scalp doesn't pay attention to the fact that your hair is thinning out and continues to secrete oil from the sebaceous glands as if you were still blessed with a full head of your crowning glory. That is why thinning hair often looks greasy, dirty and unkempt.
So guys, take that giant leap of faith and have your locks shorn short. Be happy with what you have been given and rejoice in the glory of your hairless fate. You won't regret it!Wednesday, April 13, 2011

Why does red hair color fade so fast?
The main reason that reds fade so quickly is that many years ago the FDA determined that the red dye stock molecule we used in our industry caused cancer in laboratory rats when you gave it to them in ridiculously excessive amounts. My thoughts on the subject were that rats already have a rough life, why would they want to make them live in a cage and deliberatly cause them to get cancer?
Back to the subject, the dye stock that they replaced had a smaller molecular size than the one that they replaced it with, wich allowed it to penetrate deeply into the cuticle layer of the hair shaft giving it a better chance of staying in the hair for a longer period of time. The one that we are currently allowed to use, with it's larger molecular size, sits in the outer layer of the cuticle where it washes out of the hair more quickly.
Another thing to consider is that the very bold, intense colors that are popular with some of our younger guests are only designed to stay in the hair for eight to ten shampooings. So,if you are looking for a more permanent color they are not a good option for you to choose.
Sun and heat are an artificial redheads worst enemy.Keeping your hair covered during the sun and fun of summer is not always practical but it will slow down the rate at wich your color fades. Check your water temperature when showering or bathing. To some, a scalding hot shower feels good in the morning but it will make your color fade faster.Keeping your hair in optimum condition by using a professional shampoo and conditioner will help you keep your color longer. Check with your stylist as to what products will work best for your hair.

IS IT DANDRUFF?
We get this question every year particularly during the winter.People notice the little white flakes on their shoulders and come rushing into the salon in a panic wanting to know what dandruff shampoo we recommend to rid themselves of this proplem. Relax everyone. It's probably not dandruff. It is most likely dry scalp.
Winter in the Midwest takes its toll on our skin as well as our hair. The cold, harsh winter air sucks the moisture right out of everything. Add to this the fact that we spend more of our time indoors with the furnace running or in our cars with the heat on, it's no wonder that we feel like we are being mumified by the end of the season.
Most "dandruff" shampoos on the market adress the problem by exfoliating the dead skin cells on the scalp. The problem is that the products usually register high on the alkalinity scale, making the problem worse by further drying out the scalp and continuing the problem with no resolve.
To remedy this embarrasing situation we recommend a good, nourishing, moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as Kenra's Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner. When you use these products at home make sure you follow your Stylists recommendations or the directions on the back of the product regarding how long the conditioner should be left on. Make sure that you work the product thoroughly onto the scalp and thru your hair for maximum benefits. This goes for our male guests, also. A lot of guys don't want to take the time to condition.
If this doesn't help the problem, a trip to the salon might be in order. At Vincent's Hair Design we have products designed to give you maximum conditioning in a minimal amount of time and our staff is trained to select wich products are right for your hair. They can also recommend wich home care products are best for you.
